The CMM group's broad research objective is investigation and modelling of complex phenomena involving interactions of processes at different scales. While phenomena of different physical origins have been considered, the group has a special interest in developing new modelling approaches for multi-scale processes in turbulent combustion.

The group leader, Alex Y Klimenko is credited with development of conditional methods (CMC, PCMC, etc) which represent a methodology for deriving, closing and using equations for conditional expectations in application for practical modelling of reacting flows. The other approaches developed by the group include Multiple Mapping Conditioning (MMC), which effectively unifies conditional and pdf method into a single universal modelling method, and sparse-Lagrangian methods, which allow to perform high-quality LES simulations of reacting flows with nearly thousandfold reduction of computational cost. The other research areas attended by the group involves reacting flows in porous media, flows with vortisity, gasification, fires, thermodynamics, competitive modelling and complex competitive systems, etc.
The group cooperates with many institutions around the world inlcuding the University of Sydney, University of Karlsruhe, Cornell University, Universität der Bundeswehr München and University of Wyoming, University of California (SD), Stanford University, Imperial College, Stuttgart University, DOE NETL (USA) as well as many other leading institutions, government organisations and private enterprises.
